Humors: a Geography of the Heart
(Cycladic Sketches)

Art from the Cyclades seems the embodiment of repose and balance. The schematic figures from these Greek isles – eyeless, hook-nosed, with elongated necks and with arms folded at the waist – are themselves marble islands of stillness. Their presence has inhabited my work since 1995.

These sketches are made on handmade kitakata paper that was colored with powdered and metallic pigments. The source of inspiration –Cycladic figures – are formulaic with only slight individual nuance.

In my drawings they took on certain moods or attitude, not entirely in keeping with the staid formality of the sculptures. They are a starting point from which I digress, to express a quality of mind, a humor; such as anticipation, exile, timidity or wonder. They seem to express some of the many emotional places we inhabit in the geography of the heart.
