Intimacy: ROME sketches and beyond

My images are invoked by direct encounters with sculptures from antiquity. For years I have accrued a visual inventory of sculptures as they appear today, where often only a fragment of the original remains. From these fragments, I build my work on paper: interpretations which aim to bring these images back into the mutable world.

Drawing from sculpted objects differs from drawing from life—it is the ability to observe, draw, photograph a form in intimate detail, with the luxury of time and absence of awkwardness. I summon a response to sculpture that conveys my sense of wonder, of the livingness of an ancient object....
