Lotus

The lotus figures in many religions as a symbol of purity, harmony, beauty, longevity, and the transcendent nature of humanity. It is a symbol of the axis mundi, the center of the universe, and of enlightenment attained only through passage from the murkiness of the mundane.

The lotus (Nelumbo Nucifera), the botanical namesake of the yogic position, roots itself in mud - a symbol of all that is unclear and deluded in this world of samsara, or cyclic existence. From this place - primordial ooze, as it were - the lotus flower's fragile stem tunnels its way through dark waters, seeking light. Its radiant corolla rests above the water, a single blossom opening and closing in response to the sun's turning.
