The Corps of Discovery spent six sunny days and one hundred and twelve cold, sick, rained-on days wintering near the mouth of the Columbia River before journeying back to St. Louis with the news of their discoveries. The Clatsop Indians helped them build a fort on their land – a complex of buildings that Oregonian weather subsequently rotted in less than fifty years. Occasionally the heaviness of the Expedition's immense journey may have lifted as they set their focus outward to where earth meets sky – clean, pure, big....
